An audiobook review of Nicholas’ work on “THREE MOMENTS OF AN EXPLOSION” – by China Mieville
Read by Nicholas Guy Smith, Bruce Mann, MacLeod Andrews, Hillary Huber • Unabridged • DECEMBER 2015
This short story collection should cause anyone new to author Miéville or narrator Nicholas Guy Smith to seek more from both. Smith narrates nearly all the stories, while the other narrators contribute only one or two each. Smith’s delivery meshes well with Miéville’s preoccupations: Both share an ability to convey the tension between the ordinary and the strange. At times, the stories are reminiscent of Ursula Le Guin’s; at other times, of Stephen King’s. Most require the narrator to hold reality in suspension. Smith easily negotiates that requirement, using subtly rising and falling intonation and pacing that quickens, slows, and pauses to great effect. Several of the stories beg development into a novel. If that should happen, Smith would be an excellent choice to narrate.

An audiobook review of Nicholas’ work on “JOHANNES CABAL AND THE BLUSTERY DAY And Other Tales of the Necromancer” – by Jonathan L. Howard
Read by Nicholas Guy Smith, Jonathan L. Howard (Intro.) • Unabridged • OCTOBER 2015
“The walking dead, murderous pixies, and unsatisfied spirits are all in a day’s work for Johannes Cabal, an aristocratic young man whose scientific fascination with the deceased knows no bounds.
Narrator Nicholas Guy Smith leads the listener through this ghoulish collection of short stories, his charming British accent accentuating the heavy dash of dour humor that pervades Cabal’s universe. The introduction, read by the author himself, prepares listeners for a sometimes ghastly but mostly enjoyable ride.
Smith has a way of lowering his voice to hushed tones during suspenseful points, piquing the listener’s interest. His conversational tone ties the stories together, making them equally enjoyable to listen to in bite-size chunks or several hours at a time.”

An audiobook review of Nicholas’ work on REVENGE OF THE KREMLIN – by Gérard de Villiers
Read by Nicholas Guy Smith Mystery & Suspense • 6.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2015
Is the British government helping Moscow in a cover-up? Malko Linge, an Austrian version of James Bond, is assigned by the CIA to find out why British MI5 won’t investigate the supposed suicide of Boris Berezovsky. Narrator Nicholas Guy Smith moves through the curt dialogue and lengthy descriptions in clipped tones that set the tone for a story of international espionage. Smith is consistent in his delivery, maintaining a steady pace and pitch throughout the complicated actions sequences. There are many characters, settings, and motives for the listener to keep track of. Smith’s Russian-accented English rings true and helps differentiate speakers in the large cast.

An audiobook review of Nicholas’ work on “CHAOS IN KABUL”
– A Malko Linge Novel:
“The Malko Linge spy novels sell millions of copies worldwide, though they’re not well known in the U.S. This translation produced for American listeners couldn’t be timelier.
Narrator Nicholas Guy Smith’s accent and enunciation make listening a pleasure. Often compared to the James Bond series, de Villiers’s thrillers are known for their extensive displays of spycraft and geopolitics that reflect current political and military events.
Smith’s pacing and rhythm match the action, whether shoot-outs or explicit sex scenes. Using slight changes in intonation and timbre to differentiate gender and nationality, Smith shifts distinctly between diverse characters as Linge, an Austrian aristocrat under contract with the CIA, attempts to survive in Kabul as American forces withdraw from Afghanistan.”
An Audiobook review of Nicholas’ work on “Money”:
“Using a warm, personal tone, narrator Nicholas Guy Smith makes this dense history of the evolution of money accessible. His precise diction and British accent help establish a rhythm in the detailed explanations of the origins of currency. Listeners will appreciate his deliberate delivery, which makes sense of the kind of complex sentences that are often found in financial titles.”
